Explore life science in new ways and turn curiosity into innovation.
Our department offers a range of introductory and advanced life science courses here at Coastline College. If you're looking to transfer credit or fulfill a prerequisite, we're here to help you along your educational journey.
Research opportunities for Coastline students have recently included innovation in prosthetic models, statistical analysis of plant and invertebrate community data, and native plant propagation. For those interested in the medical field there is a student-run Pre-Med Club.
Excel in research, elevate your graduate application or turn your passion for science into the start of a fulfilling career by joining the Biological Sciences & Allied Health program.
Dr. Deborah C. Henry is a board-certified neurological surgeon and this year's Academic Senate President. Learn more about her teaching style and why she has inspired students to pursue various medical fields for over a decade.

If you are a STEM student in high school, college or graduate school looking to pay for your education, you should be applying for scholarships!
Careers in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Math, Environmental Science, and Physics continue to be among the most in-demand and highest-paying available. Fortunately, Coastline has financial aid opportunities and a new STEM scholarship available for students interested in a STEM education. Students can lower the financial burden of tuition without taking out loans. This new STEM scholarship will also include internship and mentorship opportunities, offering you a chance to make valuable industry connections and gain experience at the nation's prominent companies.
All students interested in the medical field are encouraged to join the Pre-Med Club. Explore careers, application processes, and study strategies. Dr. Daniel Salcedo serves as the faculty advisor. Check out what's new through our latest newsletter. Ask how you can join!
As part of Diversity of Organisms (BIOL C185), students were required to conduct research projects related to ecology or anatomy. Andre Franco founded a local chapter of e-NABLE, an organization that makes prosthetics for under-served populations around the world. He started a fund raising campaign and secured a 3-D printer. By the end of the fall 2017 semester, Franco successfully led his group to produce prosthetic hands for 2 children under the age of 11 in Brazil. He aims to continue and expand his work with e-NABLE. For more info contact Dr. Tanya Murray.
In May 2019, the Biological Sciences and Allied Health Department hosted a Health Science Academic Triathlon where four-person teams competed in the categories of Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry. Prizes were awarded to the top 3 teams. Keep your eye on the calendar for next year's competition!
In the effort to help protect medical professionals and our loved ones from COVID-19, Coastline College Biotechnology students, with the supervision of Dr. Tanya Hoerer, have established a goal to create protective masks and face shields for local clinics, first responders and hospitals. DONATE NOW to support Coastline students who are making an impact - funds raised for the PPE will support building materials, machinery, packaging and printing.
