Articulation is the process that helps students make a smooth transition from Coastline Community College to other colleges and universities without encountering delays through duplicated or unnecessary coursework.
Courses at Coastline are identified as equivalent to, or meet the intent/spirit of, courses at the university. This aids students in completing requirements toward their future educational goals. Some of these articulated courses may be required for a student to be admitted to the campus of their choice.
When the word "articulation" is used in education, it often has different meanings and connotations, depending on the setting. Articulation, for our purposes, refers specifically to course articulation - that is, the process of developing a formal, written agreement that identifies courses (or sequences of courses) on a "sending" campus that are comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of specific course requirements at a "receiving" campus. Successful completion of an articulated course assures the student and the faculty that the student has taken the appropriate course, received the necessary instruction and preparation, and that similar outcomes can be assured, enabling progression to the next level of instruction at the receiving institution.
Courses can be identified as equivalent (or course-to-course), meet major requirements, and/or general education requirements. Some courses are articulated to transfer to the other campuses but do not meet specific requirements, these courses are referred to as elective courses.
Coastline College has articulation agreements with the California State University (CSU) system, the University of California (UC) system, and numerous private and out-of-state colleges and universities.
The Articulation Officer (AO) is the person responsible for facilitating articulation agreements between Coastline College and other colleges and universities. The AO works with faculty in identifying courses that articulate to fulfill California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) general education pattern requirements, as well as campus-specific course-to-course articulations important for major preparation requirements. In addition, the AO facilitates agreements with other community colleges, private, and out-of-state colleges and universities. The AO is an advocate for the transfer student and seeks to ease the transfer process by providing up-to-date advisement on Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), CSU General Education Breadth, and Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).
