Academic Plans
The English Associate in Arts for Transfer degree emphasizes the critical reading and writing skills needed to analyze literature in academic terms. Students taking this major examine a variety of genres and gain a better understanding of a given literary work's relevance to the time period in which it was written as well as the work's relationship to an author's life, time, and culture. In other words, students develop the ability to analyze literature in context. Completion of this major provides a foundation for students interested in pursuing a B.A. in literature.

The study of English provides opportunities to explore the worlds of literature and culture. This English major produces graduates with demonstrated skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, writing, and communication. With this major, students build important research and critical thinking skills. They learn to discern what is important and to synthesize that information for other usage. As English majors are learning to read with a critical eye, they are also polishing their own writing skills.

Academic Reading and Writing
Enrolling in Academic Reading and Writing
In accordance with California laws AB 705 and AB1705, all incoming Coastline students are eligible to enroll directly in English C1000: Academic Reading and Writing (4 units), ideally during their first semester. Coastline's placement guidance states that students are already eligible to register for transfer-level English and encourages early enrollment in ENGL C1000.
English C1000 is a 4-unit transfer-level composition course that fulfills English composition requirements for local general education, Cal-GETC, IGETC, and CSU GE Breadth.
Students who would benefit from additional writing support may also enroll in ENGL C080N, a free noncredit support course that provides access to the Writing Center. Coastline also encourages students to make use of its broader academic support resources while completing transfer-level English.
English Language Learners and ESL Students
Students who are non-native speakers of English with limited English proficiency may enroll in ESL coursework to strengthen language skills and support success in ENGL C1000. Counseling can help students determine the most appropriate course pathway.

Current English offerings
English C1000: Academic Reading and Writing teaches students grammar and punctuation conventions, logic, critical thinking, fallacies, reading comprehension strategies, research methods, and the structures of the most common essay modes.
After completing English C1000, students who are planning to transfer to the University of California, to any private college or university in California, or to any university may take English C1001 Critical Thinking and Writing. Students who are on the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) track are required to take 1001, which focuses on reading critically, thinking critically, writing argumentative essays, and writing a research paper.
For other types of writing, students may take Fiction Writing, Technical Writing, Business Writing, or Business Communication. Coastline has a wide variety of literature courses from which to choose: Appreciation of Literature, Children's Literature, American Lit through the Civil War, American Lit 1865 to Present, British Lit to 1800, British Lit Since 1800, Borderlands and Beyond: Chicano/a, Latine, and Latin American Lit, Black Voices: Introduction to African American Lit, Asian American and Transpacific Lit, Gothic Victorian Lit, and Contemporary Gothic Lit.
