Equity at Coastline
Student Equity is defined as fair access, opportunity, and advancement for all students, while working to address systemic barriers especially those of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, gender, language, and family background that prohibit student success. Student Equity is committed to allowing each student to have individualized instruction, opportunity, and the support needed for success.
Goals
The 2022-25 Student Equity Plan goals:
- Increase equity practices across all modalities in which we serve students.
- Focus on practices and pedagogies for online instruction.
- Advance the equity mindset and practice at Coastline College.
- Provide culturally relevant student services and instruction.
- Provide professional learning opportunities for campus community.
- Work with Coastline Pathways to streamline and scale equity initiatives that support student access, retention, and completion.
How is Coastline working toward equity?
Coastline college aims to work providing an equitable experience for faculty, staff and students. Coastline is committed to ensuring that although each student who enters our campus has a goal, we realize that they each start their college or professional journey at a different place.
Because of that, Coastline aims to serve each student based on where they are when they enter, providing services, resources, etc. that support individual student needs.
Equality is providing each student the same.
Equity is meeting each student where they are and providing them with the context and tools they need to be successful.
Diversity and Inclusion
Taking a cue from Southern California itself, Coastline thrives when students of all types are given the opportunity to succeed. That means that Coastline's campuses are welcoming atmospheres no matter one's race, gender, religion, background, orientation, physical abilities, etc. As an institution of higher learning, we know that good ideas can come from anywhere. Diversity doesn't just make as more open, it makes us better.
Special Programs & Services
The mission of Coastline's Special Programs and Services is to facilitate academic proficiency and independence for students with disabilities by providing accessible, effective, creative support services in a caring and respectful environment. Our program promotes shared responsibility with students, programs, professors and college partners to achieve student success. Students with disabilities are an integral part of the Coastline College community.
Student Equity Office
Coastline's Student Equity Office provides guidance to the Student Equity and Achievement Plan as well as provides resources to students. Through our lending computer program, basic need support, book vouchers, and support of the food pantry- students can provide direct support that will assist them persist at Coastline. The Student Equity Office is committed to allowing each student to have individualized instruction, opportunity, and the support needed for success.
LGBTQ+
Coastline College has an expressed commitment to equity and inclusion for students, faculty and staff members who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA). We support all students, however they choose to identify, and our campuses have gender neutral restrooms. We strive to provide resources to inform and support.
Dolphin Assistance Program
As a student at Coastline we want to ensure that your basic needs are met to assist you in reaching our goals of student success. The Office of Student Equity in collaboration with other departments of campus have resources available to assist Coastline Students regarding the food pantry, housing, technology, and textbooks.
Umoja Community
Coastline's Umoja Community is a learning community dedicated to transforming, enriching and advancing the lives of Black students through infusing culturally relevant pedagogy and practices. Umoja provides a space for students to be seen and heard.
AANAPISI
"Title III AANAPISI" is our shorthand name for a five-year grant awarded to Coastline College by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the grant is to help Coastline serve our students more effectively by becoming a stronger, more responsive institution.
Diversity Brown Bag Lunches
The brown bag series is discussions are being hosted by the Diversity Workgroup to help facilitate discussion around diverse topics that are important to our college and work. Topics include: White Guilt, Unearned Privilege and Discomfort with hearing or speaking other languages.
Faculty Equity Curators
Faculty will be supported with a stipend to create and share an online Canvas module/activity that is equity minded. Workshops will be held to educate faculty on specific ideas for development of the activity, and faculty will be compensated with the stipend after the activity/module is completed and shared.
Book Borrowing & Book Vouchers
In order to increase access and retention, Coastline has started a book lending program, to remove the barrier of students not enrolling in classes due to economic hardships regarding purchasing books.
Student Equity Funds Request Form
The Office of Student Equity has dedicated funds to support proposals from faculty, classified, students, and management that intend to close equity gaps and address the disproportionate impacted student populations at Coastline College.
To be considered, complete the Student Equity Request Form for a project or idea that supports the transformation of the college to develop clear pathways for success and the closure of student equity gaps.
Note: funds cannot be used for gifts, student stipends, political contributions, course delivery, professional learning, hiring, or supplanting funding that already exists.
Each request must be:
- Aligned with the College Mission
- Aligned with Coastline Pathways
- Align with one of the 5 Student Success Metrics
- Data-informed

Coastline proudly serves students from a variety of backgrounds, with enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students and at least 10 percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander students.

Equity Ally Series
Due to students' diverse needs and realities, the College will educate faculty, staff, and students on resources and support available for different populations. Through training and education, students will have contact with employees who are able to assist them in meeting their education goals. The trainings and resources that have been offered include the following: Safe Zone Training for LGBTQAI+, Vet Net, Undocually, 1st Gen, Cultural Awareness at an AANAPISI Institution and LGBTQAi+ resources for students.

Committee Mandate
The Student Equity and Achievement Work Group provides direction for the efforts, implementation, and evaluation of the ongoing Student Equity and Achievement Plan, which is intended to encourage student engagement and guide teaching practices, as well as foster an inclusive and equitable campus environment. The Work Group members act as area representatives, providing recommendations and direction regarding mandates, applicable legislation, and needs.

The Coast Community College District (Orange Coast College, Golden West College, and Coastline) continue to strengthen our efforts around diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. Coastline College is focused on creating a culture of inclusive excellence by uplifting employees and students through an environment that is equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible. We have a strong focus and importance on D.E.I.A. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access).
DEISAA Committee
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism Committee (or DEISAA, pronounced "day-suh") coordinates the planning and implementation of activities and initiatives for advancing the College's work in these areas.
