The Student Success Center provides learning assistance (tutoring) to Coastline students across the curriculum. Online tutoring is also available in Canvas through NetTutor and Smarthinking, which are partners of the Student Success Center.
We can be reached by phone (714-714-7277) or email (success@coastline.edu).
We are open during regular business hours (M-F, 9am-5pm) during the week during the regular academic year in fall and spring. Please allow up to 24 hours to receive a response not including weekends or holidays.
What is tutoring?
Tutoring is a form of learning assistance focused on helping students optimize their learning and their performance on their assignments. Through tutoring students can develop a growth mindset to be successful in their studies. Students develop the determination to dream, to be organized, to learn, to have a plan, to innovate, and to never give up. At Coastline, this is known as Dolphin, and it is the value system of the Student Success Center.
Can I get help with any class?
Yes.
The Student Success Center provides assistance across the curriculum for assignment preparation and how to study. For specific content tutoring, please contact one of our online tutoring partners available through your Canvas course(s). NetTutor (Online Tutoring) and SmarThinking provide content tutoring in over 150 subjects ranging from writing, the sciences, math, and more.
Are tutors available to meet in person?
Currently tutoring is offered only online. See our online tutoring services.
Can I meet with a tutor live online?
Yes.
If you are being tutored on NetTutor or Smarthinking you can meet with tutors live and you can request to have audio and visual turned on. If the session starts with a virtual chat, ask to have the video and audio options.
Live online tutoring appointments can also be made by emailing success@coastline.edu.
What technology do I need?
The same technology that you use to access your Coastline classes is all that is needed. Online tutoring provided by NetTutor or Smarthinking is accessed through the Canvas page for your course(s).
If you wish to interact with your online tutor through audio and video, it is recommended that you have a webcam and microphone enabled. Ask the tutor in your session if you have specific questions about audio-visual capabilities.
Is there a time limit for tutoring?
It depends.
Based on the service being accessed, there may be a limit on the default number of hours available to each student if you are accessing one of our online tutoring partners (e.g., NetTutor or SmarThinking) through Canvas.
For specific questions regarding time limits or if you receive a message about exceeding allotted time, please contact the Student Success Center (success@coastline.edu). There is no time limit for interacting with the actual Student Success Center, but please note that due to limited staffing response time and availability can vary.
I don't see any tutoring options available in my Canvas course page. What do I do?
Please ask your instructor to enable online tutoring. Instructors can email success@coastline.edu for assistance.
Can I submit an essay or a paper for feedback?
Yes.
Please access the paper drop-off areas found via Canvas within NetTutor (Online Tutoring) or Smarthinking.
