Information about English, ESL, and Math placement.
Placement
California has two laws, AB 705 and AB 1705, that removed placement barriers for English and math for students in the California Community Colleges.
When you begin your journey with us, you are already eligible to register for English C1000 (Academic Reading and Writing) and a transfer-level math course (i.e., Math C100-180).
If you are a non-native speaker of English with limited English proficiency, you may register for English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) to support your success with ENGL C1000.
Research shows that students who take transfer-level English and math in their first year can and will succeed if appropriate time and study habits are in place.
Please also visit our Academic Support page for information about tutoring and learning support to assist you throughout your journey.
Coastline encourages all students to take ENGL C1000 during their first semester of college. In this course students practice the fundamentals of writing and reading at college level. These skills will help you throughout your journey and beyond. Additionally, for any course that requires writing, you can enroll in English C080N, a free, non-credit support course that provides access to the Writing Center.
Coastline offers in-person English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) courses designed for non-native speakers of English who want to increase their English language proficiency. Contact the Counseling Office at (714) 241-6162 or counselingdept@coasltine.edu for assistance in choosing an ESL class. You may also visit the Westminster/Le-Jao campus for more information.
Students are strongly encouraged to register for a transfer-level math course during their first or second semester. If you are a recent high school graduate, your GPA and last math class taken/passed will be automatically shared with Coastline when you apply. This information can be helpful to determine which course to take. We also encourage you to meet with a counselor to ensure you take the course(s) you need for your educational goal. Additionally, for any course that requires math, you can enroll in Math C080N, which is a free, non-credit support course that provides access to the Math Center.
Based on your educational goal, your math requirement will be in one of the following pathways: Statistics/Liberal Arts Math, Business Calculus/Finite Math, STEM Calculus.
