Rising Tide Scholars care and commitment for Coastline's formerly incarcerated and systems impacted students.
The Rising Tide Scholars program at Coastline College is part of the California Community College's Rising Scholars Network and is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters transformative learning, educational excellence, and career readiness. Our team is dedicated to meeting the individual and collective needs of our scholars.
Hello, my name is Sean Jacobs and I have assumed the current role of the student assistant/peer mentor of the Rising Tide Scholar Program. I am honored to be able to serve our community of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students. I am currently enrolled in Coastline in pursuit of my AA for transfer in psychology.
I am no stranger to the challenges of leading a life wrought with homelessness, drug abuse, and incarceration. Over 4 years ago I found myself in front of an all too familiar judge who proceeds to tell me, "Mr. Jacobs, it seems you are serving a life sentence on the installment plan." His comment about how much time I spent incarcerated led me to make decisions that would alter my life forever, and for the better.
I am a single father of two teenagers and currently take care of my mother who has Alzheimer's disease. The fact that I am now present in my family's life is a driving force in my motivation to help others have the same opportunity to be there for the ones they love. I am also employed full-time as a CADC Drug and Alcohol Counselor for an in-patient treatment center. Fun Fact: I have a dog trained as a service dog and he has gone to work with me every day for over 2 years!
The Rising Tide Scholars program believes that every formerly incarcerated or systems impacted individual has the ability to transform their lives through a higher education. As such we are committed to providing our students with the following programmatic services and resources:
